For three decades, photographer Antonio Turok has traveled through his native Mexico and Central America, capturing images that speak of the human condition in places like Nicaragua and the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Though documentary, the soft, black-and-white photographs he creates seem otherworldly, like ghostly reminders of another place or time. He has gathered his work into books, visual diaries of his travels, including Chiapas: El Fin Del Silencio (End of Silence), which documents the cultural clash between the indigenous Maya Indians and encroaching modern society, through a detailed look at Mayan customs, rituals, and community life.
